I am thrilled! The House of Representatives has passed the health care reform bill with 219 votes--three more than necessary for passage. My heart goes out to Nancy Pelosi for making this happen; this is her day, the first day of Spring. She knew where the votes were and where they were not--and certainly not among the republicans who made false statements and mischaracterized the bill all day. It was boring but worthwhile to watch congress in action. Pelosi told the president earlier in this game that he could not win any republican support, and she was right--not one vote!
With hardly a minute to celebrate, Pelosi will have to address the Fall elections And all of us need to get back to the issues of the economy, jobs and the Middle East. Say, isn't Hilary Clinton doing a great job?

Nancy Pelosi has recently been called the most powerful woman in America. I am thrilled with her determination, talents and achievement in passing the health care reform bill. Another powerful woman comes to mind: Hilary Clinton. Her performance as Secretary of State has been outstanding; and Michele Flournoy is Deputy Secretary of Defense on policy and came to her position with a distinguished record of service.
ReplyDeleteConsidering two future goals:
1) Bringing more equity and collaboration between Departments of State and Defense in order to reduce the military's influence and increase the State Department's efforts, including Agency for International Development (USAID) Their budgets are $758 billion for Defense vs. $52 billion for State.
2) Changing the culture of the military from an emphasis on conventional warfare (e.g. WWII) to a role in smaller conflicts where they may prevent or contain war.
Relative to the abilities of the women noted above, the chances are better in achieving these goals with women in power.
